Area Code 959

The blue and red area is the state of Connecticut; the red area is area code 860
Area code 860 is a telephone area code that covers the eastern and northwestern parts of Connecticut. The area code stretches along the eastern and northern borders as well as small portion of the western border. The proposed area code 959 announced in August 1999 will overlay area code 860 when new numbers become needed. A date for implementing the 959 area code has yet to be determined. Effective November 14, 2009, all calls within Connecticut must be dialed with 10 digits beginning with the area code, including calls within the same area code.

The boundary with area code 203 runs west to east, and then south, straddling these 17 towns: Sherman, New Milford, Bridgewater, Roxbury, Washington, Morris, Watertown, Thomaston, Plymouth, Bristol, Southington, Berlin, Middletown, Middlefield, Durham, Killingworth, and Clinton; all of which are in 860. Watertown and Durham each border four towns in 203. Bridgewater, Roxbury (a part of which is in 203), Plymouth, Southington, Middlefield, and Durham all border two towns in 203; the remaining ten border one.

The area code was created in 1995 to supplement 203 when that area code was cut back to Fairfield County (except for the Town of Sherman), New Haven County, and the towns of Bethlehem, Woodbury, and a small part of Roxbury in Litchfield County.
